She's using the "hanging guard" position, which seems logical in tall grass, as one does not want the sword to be impeded by any sweeps through the grass.  I am not sure what the tactical reason is for her left arm being extended. This position seems more suited to fighting in which spin moves are a possibility, since the arm can assist both in balance and in increasing the body's spin via conservation of angular momentum. Not sure the terrain here is suitable for that style of sword-fighting.  Maybe the sword-master who taught her was Asian and favored samurai moves.


 Perhaps she can tell us more about her thinking on this, assuming she survives her encounter here with her adversary. Maybe her opponent is very short, or at least does not have a long reach.
